Due to lack of suitable opportunities in the job market, qualified professionals are making a beeline for the maidans across the city where this year’s police recruitment drive is in progress.
The race to become a constable in the Mumbai police is turning out to be a rat race, with over two lakh people vying for just 1,137 vacancies this year. This comes to around a job for every 175 candidates. And among those wishing to get one of the coveted posts are 3 doctors, 5 lawyers, 167 MBAs s and 423 engineers, in a telling comment on the lack of suitable opportunities in the job market.
While the minimum qualification required for the constabulary post is HSC (Std XII), there were snaking queues of professionally qualified youth at Hutatma Maidan in Naigaon, where the Mumbai Police is carrying out physical tests of the candidates. Around 9,000 candidates are undergoing the tests daily at Naigaon, Goregaon police grounds and Ghatkopar.
