In the February 2016 budget, Finance minister Arun Jaitley announced a number of measures such as the creation of a new Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) with an initial budget endowment of 100 billion rupees (US$1.5 billion) and also plans for development of 20 world class universities (10 public sector and 10 private sector) to meet the growing demand from Indian students.

As far as the reforms relating to the quality of education is concerned, there have been announcements such as universalize of primary education as well as delinking the new universities from University Grants Commission (UGC) will provide the foundation for an improved quality of education. The new universities will not be associated with the UGC and this typically implies these institutions will be outside government control, leaving them with considerable authority on setting the curriculum, fees as well as hiring the faculty. Shakuntala Devi – The Human Computer

Shakuntala Devi – The Human Computer

India, a land popular for it’s contribution in the field of mathematics has always been proud of it’s mathematical prodigies and one such prodigy in recent times of modern India was Shakuntala Devi who was world renowned & referred to as “Human Computer”.

Born in 1929 in a poor family in Bangalore (India), Shakuntala Devi dropped out of school because her father, a circus worker, could not afford the monthly school fee of Rs 2. She grew up in a slum and at a very young age, her mathematical abilities were recognized by her father. There is an interesting anecdote about how he recognized it. At the age of 3, when she started playing cards with her father, he was surprised to find that she was winning all the games against him everyday. Suspecting some foul play, he began his “investigation” during which he realized that she was memorizing all the card numbers and their sequence as the game progressed in the initial rounds and with her memory power, she was able to predict the sequence of cards in the subsequent rounds in the same game and thus wait to pick cards strategically to help her win.

Her father taught her mathematical operations like multiplication, division & square root and took her to his circus to demonstrate her quick calculation abilities & memory power to the crowds. As the word about her skills spread, she started doing road shows as well across the city. At the age of 6, she gave her first major show at Mysore University and there was no turning back after that.


In her early 20s, she toured Europe extensively to demonstrate her skills. During an interview on BBC, she was given a complicated mathematical calculation which she solved within seconds but her answer was different from what the interviewer & his team had calculated. When she insisted that her answer was right, the interviewer & his team of math experts reexamined their calculations for several minutes and finally admitted that their initial calculations were wrong. That incident spread like wildfire across the world after which she was being popularly referred to as “The Human Computer”. During her Europe tour, she was invited by several reputed Universities including the University of Rome.

In 1977, at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, she calculated the 23rd root of a 201-digit number. It had taken four minutes for a professor to write the problem on the board, and it took more than a minute for a Univac computer to figure out the answer. Shakuntala Devi got it in 50 seconds. “Getting hurt or feeling difficulty is not something caused by external reasons, it is sheer internal contemplation of the things we perceive in the daily life”

The normal observation of our surroundings be it weather changes or words and actions of other people generate the response or reaction in us. Some people feel difficulty to go out in the rain, on the contrary some of us love the raining, we take joy in walking and dancing. Similarly the words and actions of others, if someone point out our errors or mistakes we get irritated, but the person whom we love make similar comments we take them seriously and go for deep introspection, later on the available possibilities we make corrections to our personalities.

So it is the love and affinities or reluctance and rejection for certain things and persons, our emotions of joy and distress lied. It is our “Mind”and it’s perceptions manifest all the negative and positive feelings.

Another daily experience is that, when someone uses a four wheeler for commuting, if it get struck in the middle of the road and he is offered a two wheeler to ride it is a difficulty for him that he never expect to happen. Also the person riding on a motorbike, when it is punctured and having the only choice of walking towards their home is a great difficulty he could come across. This is just how people in different social strata encounter such inconveniences in their daily life. The people in upper circles feel the discomfort in the lifestyles of lower circles. What makes the difference is “perception and responding mode of our mind” to various physical and emotional conditions.

In other cases, when our life goes on smoothly, even a small disturbance at our home or work place appear as big trouble about which we crack our head day and night. If another difficulty about losing the money or job would replace the earlier as huge difficulty that we could not overcome ever in our lifetime. But if our health severely under a risk or death of one of the family member would certainly throw us into the abyss. So one trouble with great intensity surpass the other with less impact on our lives. We have to endure all with the same strength and confidence.

Sometimes the given condition when we are in happy mood, all the world around us looks very beautiful like a heaven, the next day when we are in a despair or sorrow, the same world appear discouraging and paining like a hell.
